A little about us: Nazareth Housing is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization with a long and proud history of innovation and advocacy in the field of housing, emergency shelter and homelessness prevention for low-income families in New York City. As a HUD-Certified Housing Counseling Agency, Nazareth Housing serves households at risk of homelessness due to loss of work, underemployment, or arrears issues stemming from a variety of socio-economic barriers. Nazareth Housing is the only nonprofit providing housing counseling strictly to very low-income renters in New York City. In Fiscal Year 2016, Nazareth Housing assisted 7,983 individuals.

Nazareth Housing's Housing Stability Support Project (HSSP) addresses the growing demand of households seeking assistance related to housing but not yet in need of emergency shelter through extensive HUD-certified housing counseling, needs assessment, emergency assistance for rent and utility arrears, financial security counseling and advocacy, and ongoing case management for nearly 2,500 unduplicated households annually. Nazareth Housing's Emergency Family Shelter program transitions families into permanent housing and assists families in retaining that housing. In the past year, Nazareth Housing has surpassed shelter housing targets by as much as 500% a quarter with a 150% placement rate over our annual target goals.

Nazareth Housing's LifeLab programming offers intensive, interactive workshops which empower each family member to develop positive coping mechanisms, grow confidence in housing and economic well-being, access resources, and build self-sufficiency skills. Through LifeLab, clients are educated about housing opportunities and options, fair housing practices (tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities), appropriate housing searches based on needs and capacity, suitable housing (Section 8), and utilities issues (how to manage a move or change in utility/cable/phone provider). LifeLab also enhances youth participants academic skills and promotes their social and creative engagement through theatre, artistic and musical expression, tutoring, holiday and seasonal activities, and dance. During Tax Season, Nazareth Housing offers VITA-certified Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) screenings, free-of-charge tax preparation during tax season, savings linkage resources, debt reduction advocacy, credit reporting and credit repair services, and one-on-one budget counseling.
