A little about us: For refugees resettling in the United States, a cell phone is a first and primary tool they need to connect to life-saving services. Without it, they can't call a landlord, find a job, call their caseworker, look up a bus stop, and many other crucial daily activities we all take for granted.
Who are Refugees?
Refugees are men, women and children fleeing war, persecution and political upheaval who have crossed borders to seek safety in another country. Most eventually go home when it’s safe, some stay in temporary refugee settlements, and a tiny fraction resettle in a third country, such as the U.S.
Those that resettle have to start their lives all over again from scratch. International Rescue Committee works with the Federal Government, private donations, and grants to help refugees achieve: Health, Safety, Education, Economic Wellbeing, and Power over their own lives.
International Rescue Committee helps refugee families find and purchase their own phones. However, cash assistance doesn't spread very far when it comes to paying for food, rent, transportation costs, etc. If we can lift some of this burden by getting a refugee a cell phone and month of phone service, we can put them on the path to self-sufficiency much quicker.
