Recycling for Charities, a Royal Oak-based nonprofit group, is urging everyone in the metro Detroit area to bring used electronics to Eastern Market in Detroit between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday December 12th and 19th 2009 . Alternatively donations can be made online 24/7/365 on their website at http://www.recyclingforcharities.com. All donations are tax deductible.
The goal of the collection drive is to keep electronic waste out of landfills while simultaneously benefiting charities.
Money raised from the Eastern Market collection drive will go directly to several charities in southeast Michigan. The drive also allows the public to make a contribution during the holiday season without forcing them to give money.
Many electronic items contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium and mercury that are harmful to humans, pets and the environment.
By year’s end, there will be about 550 million unused mobile and wireless phones stockpiled in the United States awaiting proper disposal. In each of the following years, that number is expected to grow by more than 175 million.
Several components used in electronic equipment, such as glass, metals and plastic, can be recycled into other products.
Recycling for Charities helps consumers properly recycle their used cell phones, PDAs, iPods and digital cameras, and donates the value of the given electronic item to other nonprofit organizations.

Money raised by Recycling for Charities is in turn donated to more than 800 charities nationwide. To date, the organization has helped keep more than 2,000 tons of e-waste out of landfills.
